Remember these Facts
Menstrual Changes
Injectable contraceptives release a steady dose of progestin (DMPA) that prevents ovulation, thickens cervical mucus, and thins the uterine lining, providing up to 3 months of protection.
Timely Follow-ups
If given within the first 5 days of your period, protection starts immediately. Otherwise, use a backup method (e.g. condoms) for the first 7 days.
Fertility Return
Irregular bleeding or spotting, especially in the first few months. Some experience lighter periods or none at all over time. Weight changes and mood shifts are also reported.

Your period has delayed? Take a pregnancy test.
If your period is more than 7 days late, take a pregnancy test about 3 weeks after the unprotected sex. Most home tests are accurate, private, and easy to use.
FAQs
Everything you need to know about injectable contraceptives, from how they work to what to expect.
How effective are injectable contraceptives?
With perfect use, injectable contraceptives are over 99% effective. With typical use (including late injections), effectiveness is around 94-96%. Staying on schedule is key to maintaining maximum protection.
What is the difference between Sayana Press and Depo-Provera?
Both contain medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) and provide 3 months of protection. Sayana Press (104 mg/0.65 ml) is injected under the skin (subcutaneous) and is designed for self-administration. Depo-Provera (150 mg/ml) is injected into the muscle (intramuscular) and is administered by a nurse or clinician.
Can I self-inject Sayana Press at home?
Yes. Sayana Press is specifically designed for self-injection. Your first injection should be supervised by a healthcare provider who will show you the correct technique. After that, you can administer it yourself at home every 13 weeks.
When should I get my next injection?
Both products are given every 13 weeks (approximately 3 months). Try not to exceed 15 weeks between injections. If you do, use a backup method and confirm with a doctor or nurse before re-injecting.
Are injectables safe while breastfeeding?
Yes. DMPA-based injectables are safe to use during breastfeeding. They do not affect milk supply or infant health. They are often recommended as a postpartum contraceptive option.
Are there any conditions that make injectables unsuitable?
Injectables may not be suitable if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding, active liver disease, a history of breast cancer, or are at high risk for osteoporosis. Speak to a Zuri Health doctor or nurse if you are unsure.
